Senior Product Designer-Toys/Collectibles/Electronics

Working independently, ThinkGeek’s Senior Product Designer is responsible for the design, development & testing of a variety of innovative products to achieve CSP (Cost, Schedule & Performance) per ThinkGeek standards, branding objectives and project plan. The Associate will provide expert leadership to improve the development & evaluation processes and to develop best practices in the area of product creation. Provide innovative designs in developing for retail/consumer goods, new products, improvements, refreshes and cost reduction – specifically for the Toys, Collectibles & Electronics product categories. Provide creative leadership to a team of designers that fosters broadened creativity, professional development, and the use of cutting edge technologies and innovative design approaches in design solutions for consumer market. The Associate will interact with his or her supervisor as needed by either. Most activities are completed with minimal supervision and broad autonomy. Some non-routine and/or unique activities may require supervisor’s and/or leadership’s advance approval.


  • Direct design team. Mentor, coach, motivate, and inspire product design team members. Conduct annual performance reviews and individual development plans to identify potential opportunities for personal and professional growth while creating plans to further cultivate skill sets
  • Work with the Director of Product Design and cross-functional teams to develop goals and strategies for product concept development and line plan development to meet corporate strategies and financial goals
  • Work with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with packaging and development standards as it relates to global packaging and product development
  • Maintain the conceptual and stylistic direction for the design team and graphic designers
  • Approve all local work to ensure it adheres to project requirements and quality standards as established by the department
  • Proficient in knowledge of brand, consumer, graphic, associated equipment and materials
  • Possess advanced creative & innovative thinking towards solutions in designing a variety of designs for best possible shelf appeal
  • Expert knowledge of new and emerging technologies in product materials, treatments & processes.
  • Expert in identifying trends in shape, material finishes new product areas and techniques.
  • Organize & oversee the presentation of the new trends & opportunities identified in respective product categories to the senior management team.
  • Proactively communicate trends and ideas identified back to colleagues, teams, senior management team
  • Expert in driving the design and development of new hard goods opportunities.
  • Expert in evaluating designs for cost effectiveness, considering material options, global sourcing, manufacturability etc.
  • Expert in performing preliminary design feasibility to determine proper size, style and affordability.
  • Sustain current designs for improvements in quality and cost.
  • Develop, manage and sustain documentation of new designs to ensure high-level accuracy in what is communicated.
  • Collaborating with the Product Management team, actively participate in onsite meetings with key factories, exhibitions, and trade fairs.
  • Organize recruitment and development for the hard goods areas within the design team.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Design or related technical field from an accredited program required or equivalent direct industry experience
  • Minimum of 8 years experience in design & development of hard good products – experience in relevant product categories is a significant plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience managing a product design team


  • Ability to design and document features, trends and features.
  • Knowledge of a variety of design/ packaging / materials including plastics.
  • Complete knowledge of methods for hard good products (specifically toy/collectibles/electronics).
  • Ability to test materials and final product per industry standards.
  • Complete knowledge of costs associated with different materials used in package design.
  • General knowledge of graphic printing, associated equipment and materials.
  • Fully proficient in 2D & 3D - SolidWorks, zBrush, Maya (or similar 3d application), Adobe Creative Suite
  • Expert in creating complex product component drawings using CAD tools, such as SolidWorks
  • Ability to travel internationally and domestically
  • Meet ThinkGeek quality standards
  • Written/verbal communication and presentation skills using spoken English — bilingual (English/Mandarin Chinese) preferred
  • Possess the learning capacity to receive and apply cross-functional training; willingness to assist other functions and work groups as needed so the department achieves or exceeds its overall business objectives
  • Provides timely guidance and feedback to help others strengthen specific knowledge/skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem

  • Expert project planning skills, including the ability to organize, prioritize and control job responsibilities in order to meet deadlines in an environment with overlapping and potentially conflicting priorities
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs, especially Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Working knowledge of the collectibles, pop culture, and/or video gaming industries
  • Ability to remain flexible and adapt to changing priorities with promptness, efficiency and ease
