HOW YOU’LL DESCRIBE THIS ROLE 

Working closely with the Product Designers, ThinkGeek’s Associate Product Designer is responsible for the design, development & testing of a variety of innovative products to achieve CSP (Cost, Schedule & Performance) per ThinkGeek standards, branding objectives and project plan. The Associate will participate in the development & evaluation processes and support best practices in the area of product creation. The Associate will also provide innovative designs in developing for retail/consumer goods, new products, improvements, refreshes and cost reduction and foster the use of cutting edge technologies and innovative design approaches in design solutions for consumer market – specifically for the home good product category. The Associate will interact with his or her supervisor frequently. Most activities are completed with general supervision & guidance and may often require supervisor’s advance approval.  All non-routine activities will require supervisor’s and/or leadership’s advance approval.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE*

  • Proficient in knowledge of brand, consumer, graphic, associated equipment and materials
  • Possess creative & innovative thinking towards solutions in designing a variety of designs for best possible shelf appeal
  • Possess and maintain awareness of new and emerging technologies in product materials, treatments & processes
  • Identify trends in shape, material finishes new product areas and techniques
  • Organize & participate in the presentation of the new trends & opportunities identified in relevant product categories to the senior management team
  • Proactively communicate trends and ideas identified back to colleagues, teams, senior management team
  • Participate in the design and development of new hard goods opportunities
  • Evaluate designs for cost effectiveness, considering material options, global sourcing, manufacturability etc.
  • Perform preliminary design feasibility to determine proper size, style and affordability
  • Sustain current designs for improvements in quality and cost
  • Develop, manage and sustain documentation of new designs to ensure high-level accuracy in what is communicated
  • Document all designs
  • Manage relationships in a manner acceptable to others and to the organization; adhere consistently with all organizational policies related to our respectful workplace
  • Model team commitment by adhering to the team's expectations and guidelines; fulfilling team responsibilities; and demonstrating personal commitment to the team by being cooperative, collaborative, and flexible

YOU’LL BE KNOWN FOR THESE:

YOU’LL HAVE ACCOMPLISHED THESE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Design or related technical field from an accredited program required or equivalent direct industry experience
  • 1-3 years of design experience in design & development - product category experience is preferred

YOU’LL NEED THESE SKILLS: 

  • Ability to proficiently design and document features and trends
  • Working knowledge of a variety of design, packaging, and materials including plastics
  • Working knowledge of product design methodologies for hard good products
  • Ability to proficiently test materials and final product per industry standards
  • Working knowledge of costs associated with different materials used in package design
  • General knowledge of graphic printing, associated equipment and materials
  • Working knowledge of 2D & 3D software - SolidWorks, zBrush, Maya (or similar 3d application), Adobe Creative Suite
  • Proficient in creating moderately complex product component drawings using CAD tools, such as SolidWorks
  • Meet ThinkGeek quality standards
  • Written/verbal communication and presentation skills using spoken English — bilingual (English/Mandarin Chinese) preferred
  • Possess the learning capacity to receive and apply cross-functional training; willingness to assist other functions and work groups as needed so the department achieves or exceeds its overall business objectives
  • Proficient project planning skills, including the ability to organize, prioritize and control job responsibilities in order to meet deadlines in an environment with overlapping and potentially conflicting priorities
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs, especially Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Working knowledge of the collectibles, pop culture, and/or video gaming industries
  • Ability to remain flexible and adapt to changing priorities with promptness, efficiency and ease
  • Consistently demonstrates a commitment to ThinkGeek & GME policies and procedures, including but not limited to, attendance, confidentiality, conflict of interest and ethical responsibilities
