Working independently, ThinkGeek's Director of Technology is responsible for establishing the technology strategy and driving successful execution through leading, and managing ThinkGeek's engineering team. The Associate must have the right balance of technical acumen and management savvy.  The Associate will be leading an agile software development team responsible for delivering applications ranging from back-office orders processing and middleware to the front-end ThinkGeek.com website.  The Associate must have the ability to adapt and grow as business needs evolve, and implement solutions that are cost effective and scalable.  Associate will interact with his or her supervisor as needed by either must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment supporting multiple business units. Most activities are completed with minimal to no supervision.  Some non-routine activities may require leadership’s advance approval.


  • Develop and execute implementation strategies for all ecommerce programs intended to drive traffic, increase conversion and yield profitable business growth
  • Stay abreast of the latest ecommerce trends and technology to keep the site at the forefront and ahead of competition
  •  Effectively prioritize and manage a development organization to ensure on-time delivery of projects with fast performance and minimal error rates, high scalability and good security as well as provide application support.
  • Serve as the strategic leader, but also be hands-on - conducting code reviews, creating technical designs and troubleshooting technical errors with the team
  • Ensure that product architectural decisions will support the goals of quality, performance, scalability, reliability, availability, maintainability, and security
  • Manage a skilled engineering team providing career development and mentorship
  • Serve as the Product Owner in an Agile product development structure
  • Partner with the DevOps, ERP, and UX managers for the reliability delivery and security of the application environment
  • Manage the technology product portfolio
  • Manage relationships in a manner acceptable to others and to the organization; adhere consistently with all organizational policies related to our respectful workplace.

  • Emotional Intelligence -  Leveraging high levels of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management, the capacity to manage behavior, navigate social complexities and make personal decisions to achieve positive results


  • BS in Computer Science, CIS, or MIS is preferred
  • 5 to 8 years of experience building software in roles of increasing responsibility and technical capability
  • 3+ years of experience managing a team of 5+ engineers


  • Ability to shift between hands-on troubleshooting and team leadership is a must
  • Solid experience with large scale web applications is required
  • Experience with Mod-Perl or Python is preferred
  • Working knowledge of MySQL and Linux is required
  • Experience with varnish and memcache are pluses
  • Understanding of web application security in a public network environment is required
  • Experience with both manual and automated software testing is preferred
  • Ability to interact with business users, database administrators and application developers
  • Familiarity with web analytics, search engines, and ecommerce are all plusses
  • Experience as an Agile coach or scrum master is preferred
  • Working knowledge of Jira and Confluence is a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a focus on customer service is required
  • Ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner
  • Possess the learning capacity to receive and apply cross-functional training; willingness to assist other functions and work groups as needed so the department achieves or exceeds its overall business objectives
  • Proficient project planning skills, including the ability to organize, prioritize and control job responsibilities in order to meet deadlines in an environment with overlapping and potentially conflicting priorities
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs, especially Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Working knowledge of the home goods, pop culture, and/or video gaming industries
  • Ability to remain flexible and adapt to changing priorities with promptness, efficiency and ease
  • Consistently demonstrates a commitment to ThinkGeek & GME policies and procedures, including but not limited to, attendance, confidentiality, conflict of interest and ethical responsibilities
